Established in 1926–27 after the forced relocation from the Taroom Aboriginal Settlement, Woorabinda continues to honour its history and culture through events like the annual Taroom Trek and Woorabinda Day. Boongara Radio, the community’s local station, plays a key role in cultural connection and communication.
In 2024, Terence Munns was elected Mayor, and the Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council is currently supported by a state-appointed financial controller to strengthen governance. The community is focused on health, safety, and infrastructure improvements, including:
• A new gym and reopened town pool with trained local lifeguards
• 7-day-a-week Night Patrol service
• A major $18 million water upgrade (2025)
• Airstrip resurfacing and upgrades
• Expansion of the Indigenous Ranger Program under the Healthy Country Plan
Woorabinda’s economy is supported by local services, government programs, and the Woorabinda Pastoral Company. The community continues to grow through investment in youth, culture, and wellbeing—backed by strong leadership and a united spirit.
